Why copied text is full of junk formatting

Most text you copy wasn't written where you're pasting it. PDFs store every visual line as its own line, so copied paragraphs arrive chopped into short fragments with a hard break after every few words. Emails wrap long lines at a fixed width and stack quote markers in front of them. And AI chat output comes dressed in markdown: ** around bold phrases, ## before headings, dashes in front of every list item.

Removing that formatting means putting the text back the way a person would write it: sentences that flow to the edge of the page, a single space between words, and a blank line only where a new paragraph really starts. How do I remove line breaks without losing my paragraphs?
Use the default “Keep paragraphs” mode. It joins lines that were hard-wrapped mid-sentence but treats a blank line as a real paragraph break and leaves it in place. You get flowing sentences and your paragraph structure stays intact. Switch to “One paragraph” only when you want everything merged into a single block.
Why does text copied from a PDF have broken lines?
PDFs store text as fixed lines on a fixed page, not as flowing paragraphs. When you copy it, every visual line ends with a hard line break, so pasting it into a document or teleprompter gives you short, chopped-up lines. Paste it into the tool above and the smart mode joins those lines back into normal sentences.
Does this tool strip markdown and other formatting characters?
Yes, turn on “Strip formatting characters”. It removes markdown symbols like ** bold ** and _italic_ markers, ## heading hashes, > quote markers, bullet and numbered-list prefixes, and converts [links](…) to their plain text. That's handy for cleaning up ChatGPT or other AI output before you use it.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The cleanup runs entirely in your browser with a bit of JavaScript. Your text is never sent to a server, uploaded or stored. You can even load the page, disconnect from the internet, and the tool keeps working.
Can it also remove extra spaces and tabs?
Yes. The “Remove extra spaces & tabs” option collapses double spaces, tabs and non-breaking spaces into single spaces and trims stray whitespace at line ends, the usual junk that comes along when you copy text from websites, emails or PDFs.
What's the difference between a line break and a paragraph break?
A line break is a single newline that just pushes text to the next line, usually an artifact of where a PDF, email or terminal wrapped the text. A paragraph break is a blank line that separates two thoughts on purpose. The smart mode removes the first kind and keeps the second.
